National Day or synonymous as Malaysia Independence Day is celebrated throughout the state on 31 August every year. The aims is to mark the country free from the shackles of colonialism from 1782 to 1957. This is an original Independence Day of Malaya which is the early name of Malaysia.
Formation of Malaysia
Moreover, on 16 September 1963 the formation of Malaysia was announced. Next, why do we celebrate Independence Day in Malaysia? Thirdly, Who is our father of Independence? Let see the memorable Independence process. Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysian Prime Minister led a delegation to negotiate with the British for Independence. He went with Ministers, and political leaders for negotiation.
Virtual Independence day 2021
A large-scale Independence day celebration was also held in Putrajaya for previous years. At that time, business buildings, residential houses and cars will embellish it with the Malaysian flag, “Jalur Gemilang”. Hence, this will further enliven the festive atmosphere feeling. However, this is the second year virtual Independence Day Celebration. However, we support virtual celebration to prevent the spread of Covid-19 disease.

Besides that, IIUM Educare boost the spirit among our students. Hence, our teachers are very creative, talented and committed. They prepare earlier various activities throughout the month for virtual learning activities. As a result, students participate well in coloring activity, cake decorating and etc. for the activities. As well as that, our students take part, perform creatively and show their patriotism spirit through the activities. This is how our younger generation easily apply the patriotic spirit.
Alhamdulillah Praise be to Allah, IIUM Educare successfully organized Independence Day celebration virtually. It runs from 20th August until peaking on 31st August 2021.
Merdeka Baby & Kids Couture
The Virtual Independence Day 2021 started with a baby & Kids couture event. The competition is for toddlers from 3-6 years old. Amazing! we are proud to see their parents designed Jalur Gemilang-theme clothes. Take a look at their creativity which really stand out. The kids looked so adorable with the glorious Jalur Gemilang themed clothes.
Creative and supportive Teachers
Despite, the creativity from teachers and students enhance patriotism spirit. Independence conveys deep meaning to all Malaysians. Therefore, IIUM Educare seize this opportunity to enhance the spirit. In addition to the “Merdeka” Kids & Couture competition, we also held several Independence celebration slots.
Some interesting slot is story of Malaysia. Teacher from each branch presenting their story creatively. In addition, we create program for several groups with Google meet links respectively. As well as that, teachers interact well during each slots with the students throughout this briefing session. Morover, children communicate among themselves and enjoy the event.
Furthermore, at that moment students do “Zumba Merdeka” together virtually. This activity is also linked by parents who have the opportunity to expend their time while working from home. This Covid19 pandemic does not prevent students and teachers from celebrating Independence Day virtually. They have fun together during “Zumba Merdeka”.

In addition, students gain knowledge about Independence day. Other than that, independence Day’s date and Father of Independence too.This is very important because children easily to remember the history of Malaysia’s independence. Therefore, when they go to school, soon they will be exposed to the meaning and History of Independence Day.

We also held a poetry competition from those around 6 years old. Most of them capable in reading and writing. They are also immensely talented. This poetry or “Sajak competition” is also to unearth the hidden talents of our students in delivering poems.
Independence day creates Patriotic spirit.
Nevertheless, not only cultivate the spirit of independence but students also enhance skills in writing, drawing and etc. Therefore, fine motor skills can help them write correctly. In addition, teachers also involve parents in the activities of this independence month. IIUM Educare students and parents are very supportive and competitive. They often get involved in whatever events or school activities. In addition, we enhance a sense of Independence spirit among teachers, and students. Besides that we also create their family bonding when they involve together in the activity.
It shapes Personality and Identity.
Apart from that, Independence Day can cultivate the spirit of patriotism and form good behavior too. Children are like white paper and easily absorb on what they see. Therefore, parents and teachers responsible to guide and reshape their behavior. When parents and students get involved in the activities, it can increase their independence spirit. Apart from fine motor skill activities, students develop their art skills in singing. They learn to sing meaningful Independence song, such as “Tanggal 31 Ogos” , and “Jalur Gemilang”. Take a look at the diagram, as we can see their parent are so supportive and sing along too.
It enhances Knowledge.
Teachers transmit the independence information to students during the activity. At that point pupils will receive, learn and gain more knowledge about Independence. This process will encourage them to increase their knowledge and nationalist spirit.
Rukun Negara
Apart from that, teachers teach the students “Rukun Negara”. Students must know “Rukun Negara” to show their respect. “Rukun Negara” is merely important where they will learn it at primary school and secondary school in future.
Why we should celebrate Independence Day?
1. To remember and appreciate the services of figures
Tunku Abdul Rahman, Rosli Dhobi, Rentap and Kanang sacrifice to achieve independence for the country.They are willing to whiten their bones rather than whiten their eyes to see the homeland where their bloodshed was colonized by foreign powers such as the British and Japan. Furthermore, they are also willing to risk their lives to pay the price of independence. These figures should be a source of encouragement to the younger generation to protect Malaysia in future.
2. Racial unity
A harmonious and prosperous nation can be formed if all these races unite, cooperate and tolerant. Besides that, we can built a multi -racial society that loves , respects, cooperates with each other. It is the most beautiful sight to show to the community abroad. As a result, we able to maintain unity between the races.
3. Strengthening the identity of Malaysians and spirit of patriotism
The Independence Day celebration is to instill the spirit of patriotism among Malaysians. Young people need a high patriotism spirit towards their own country(Malaysia). Malaysians support home-made products as they can contribute to the country’s economic development. It is comprehensible that celebrating Independence Day will consolidate identity and cultivate the spirit of love for the country.
4. To improve the image of the country
We able to increase and improve our country image through Independence Day celebration. Apart from that, Foreign countries will recognize Malaysia as a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous country. In addition, tourists eager to visit our country. As a result more foreign investors will invest in our country. It helps to increase the country’s income as well as generate the economy.
5. Respect and responsible
Hence, we must take care of Malaysia’s good name. Indeed, it includes obey, respect and responsible to our Democratic Country. Other than that, do not commit vandalism, be courteous to fellow races, and respect others. Hence, as multi – racial Malaysians, we responsible to uphold Malaysia’s name in the eyes of the world. In addition, every religion in Malaysia educates its followers to do good, maintain their behavior and respect the culture and religion of other believers.
In conclusion, praise be to Allah because this virtual independence celebration was successfully held. Although the covid-19 pandemic is still at its peak but we managed it.
